The EU Commission plans to introduce a voluntary digital passport from 2030. This will enable travellers to identify themselves digitally at the borders and thus avoid long queues at passport control, as “Der Spiegel” reports.
The system is intended to be usable not only for EU citizens, but also for travelers from non-EU countries. A biometric passport or an EU identity card is required. Travelers can submit their data to the relevant authorities in advance for verification and store the digital passport in a "digital wallet."
