The airline Eurowings will discontinue the domestic German flight service between Nuremberg and Hamburg, which was launched only a few months ago, on June 23, 2025. A spokeswoman for the Lufthansa subsidiary confirmed this upon request. The reason given was unfulfilled expectations regarding demand on this route.
The connection had only been launched at the beginning of November last year and operated four times a week. Industry experts note that the flight times, without off-peak connections, may not have been optimally tailored to business travelers. Furthermore, according to industry data, domestic German air traffic is stagnating at about half of its pre-coronavirus capacity. The reasons for this are high location costs and strong competition from rail.
Eurowings itself has recently focused its route network more on medium-haul routes, which have proven to be more economically successful. Passengers who have already booked flights for the period after June 23rd will automatically be compensated. For domestic travel from Nuremberg, Frankfurt remains the only regular connection with wide-body jets for the time being.
