Marabu Airlines is introducing a new system at Munich Airport to modernize passenger processes. Passengers of this airline can now check in their baggage themselves using the self-baggage drop-off system.
This digital automation streamlines the check-in process in the departure hall. Passengers who have already checked in online can scan their suitcases and bags themselves at the designated machines, attach them to the appropriate baggage carousels, and feed them directly into the airport's baggage handling system.
The fully automated baggage drop-off system is not a new phenomenon at Nuremberg Airport, but has been an integral part of the airport infrastructure since 2022. The operating company of the northern Bavarian airport has gradually expanded the technology to significantly reduce waiting times at traditional check-in counters during peak hours. Before Marabu Airlines joined, the system was already being used successfully by established scheduled and low-cost carriers such as KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Air France, Wizz Air, and Freebird Airlines. With the integration of the Estonian airline Marabu Airlines, the number of participating airlines in this system continues to grow.
The technological upgrade in Nuremberg follows a global trend in the aviation industry, where airports and airlines are increasingly relying on contactless and time-saving handling methods. The self-service kiosks use biometric data and advanced scanning technologies to minimize mix-ups or misrouting of luggage. For the operators of Nuremberg Airport, the increased use of the self-service kiosks by Marabu Airlines means more efficient utilization of terminal capacity, especially during the peak travel months of summer and autumn, when passenger numbers for holiday flights rise sharply.
Marabu Airlines, a sister company of Condor operating in the charter and holiday flight segment, serves various warm-water destinations in the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands from Nuremberg Airport. By introducing a self-baggage drop-off system, the airline aims to optimize its ground operations and ensure on-time departures. Despite the automation, airport ground staff will remain in the terminal to assist passengers with technical questions or problems during the self-check-in process.
