Three years after the official groundbreaking ceremony for the extension of the railway tunnel at Munich Airport, which enables rail traffic to be connected from Freising via the airport to Erding, the shell has now been completed on time.

The existing tunnel, which ended at the level of the Terminal 2 satellite, was extended in an easterly direction to enable S-Bahn and trains to pass through the airport in the future. Flughafen München GmbH (FMG) is spending a total of 115 million euros on the construction project that has now been completed.

Airport manager Jost Lammers spoke of the “proverbial light at the end of the tunnel” with a view to the perspectives that the Erdinger Ringschluss offers the airport. “An improved connection between Munich Airport and the rail network is of crucial importance for the future development of Munich Airport. It benefits both passenger comfort and climate protection. The more passengers who travel to our airport by rail in the future, the fewer climate-relevant emissions will be released by the feeder traffic, ”added Jost Lammers.
