Filzmoos in the Austrian state of Salzburg will once again establish itself as a central hub for global aeronautics in 2026. The mountain village, known as the "Balloon Village of the Alps," is preparing for a double major event: the traditional International Hot Air Balloon Weeks in January will mark the beginning of the year, followed by the prestigious Gas Balloon World Championship, the Coupe Aéronautique Gordon Bennett, in August.
Filzmoos' unique geographical location, sheltered between the Bischofsmütze and Dachstein mountains, offers ideal meteorological conditions for ballooning, particularly the low thermal activity during the winter months. With over 50 teams from more than 15 nations participating in January, the region will once again become a vibrant meeting place for pilots, technicians, and spectators from around the world. The events aim to sustainably strengthen regional tourism and further enhance the international reputation of SalzburgerLand.
International Hot Air Balloon Weeks as a winter spectacle
The International Hot Air Balloon Weeks in Filzmoos will take place from January 10th to 24th, 2026. The event is divided into two main events: the 17th Hanneshof Balloon Trophy (January 10th to 17th) and the 47th International Balloon Week Filzmoos (January 17th to 24th), which is Austria's oldest balloon meeting.
The Alpine Balloon Weeks are both a sporting competition and a spectacle for the public. In addition to the official competition flights, which depart daily at 8:00 a.m. from the Filzmoos Balloon Airfield (Hammerwiese), panoramic and passenger flights are also offered. These flights allow spectators to experience the winter mountain landscape and the peaks of the Dachstein massif from a unique perspective. Peter Donabauer, head of tourism for Filzmoos, emphasized the ideal conditions: "Filzmoos has been considered the premier destination for balloonists from all over the world for decades. Especially during the winter months, we offer ideal conditions for ballooning." For the pilots, a flight at an altitude of around 3.000 meters along the mountain giants holds a special allure.
Under favorable weather and wind conditions, experienced teams can even attempt crossings of the Alps, with routes often extending to the Adriatic coast, for example to Grado in Italy. These long-distance flights are a logistical and piloting masterpiece and attract considerable attention within the aviation community.
The magic of the "Night of the Balloons"
The International Balloon Weeks kick off on Saturday, January 10th. Night of the BalloonsA colorful highlight and one of the oldest and largest event highlights of the festival. The romantic balloon glow, in which the envelopes of hot air balloons on the ground are illuminated by controlled bursts of burners, traditionally attracts thousands of visitors.
The program begins at 16:00 PM in the village square with activities for children and families. From 18:00 PM onwards, the balloons will be assembled on the Hammerwiese meadow, giving visitors the opportunity to watch the preparation and launch up close. From 19:00 PM, DJ LuLightner will provide the musical backdrop for the evening. The highlight is the mesmerizing balloon glow, where the "dancing balloons" bathe the night sky in warm colors, creating a unique atmosphere. The grand finale of the opening night is a synchronized musical fireworks display at 20:00 PM. Such events are of enormous importance for regional winter tourism, as they attract guests away from the ski slopes and provide an additional incentive for bookings.
Filzmoos will be the center of the Gas Balloon World Championship
In addition to the traditional winter event, Filzmoos will host the world's most prestigious long-distance ballooning event at the end of August 2026: the Coupe Aéronautique Gordon Bennett, the official Gas Balloon World Championship. From August 27th to September 5th, the Salzburg mountain village will become the international center of aeronautics.
The competition was founded in 1906 by American aviation enthusiast James Gordon Bennett and is considered the ultimate challenge for gas balloonists. The goal of the race is to cover the greatest distance from the starting point. Pilots often fly for several days and nights, covering distances of over 2.000 kilometers, relying primarily on wind currents and weather conditions. Navigation and the utilization of weather systems are crucial factors for success.
The start of the 2026 Gas Balloon World Championship is scheduled for Friday, August 28th. This event will be celebrated in Filzmoos with the "First Summer Night of Balloons," featuring an extensive program including an airshow, live performances, and Alpine cuisine. Hosting this prestigious competition is a great honor for Filzmoos and the Salzburg region, underscoring the region's decades-long tradition and expertise in ballooning. The World Championship not only attracts the world's best pilots but also generates international media interest, raising the region's profile worldwide.
Tourism opportunities and regional importance
The two major events – the International Hot Air Balloon Weeks and the Gordon Bennett World Championship – are of enormous touristic and economic importance for Filzmoos and the entire region. They attract not only the active participants, but also their teams, international media representatives and a large number of spectators, resulting in high occupancy rates for accommodation providers.
The opportunity for guests to participate in a hot air balloon ride – the approximately two-hour flights are bookable from €298 per person – offers a unique experience. The combination of ballooning and winter sports is promoted through special "Balloon & Ski" packages, which include accommodation and a ski pass. These offers extend the length of stay for guests and boost revenue during the off-season of winter tourism. The synergistic effects between the major sporting event and regional tourism are evident. With these events, Filzmoos is sustainably positioning itself as one of the top destinations for alpine tourism and air sports in Europe.
