Fleet expansion at Swiss: Second Airbus A350-900 enters scheduled service

Swiss International Air Lines is expanding its long-haul fleet with a second Airbus A350-900 aircraft. Registered HB-IFB, the aircraft bears the name of Delémont, the capital of the Jura region, and, unlike the first aircraft of this series, will operate in the classic Swiss livery. The first commercial flight is scheduled for February 23, 2026, on the Zurich-Montreal route. With this addition, the company continues its fleet modernization program, following the successful technical reliability of the first aircraft of this type during its first 100 days of operation, which included approximately 900 flight hours and 300 landings.

The expansion of the A350 fleet will enable the airline to extend its international route network in the upcoming 2026 summer flight schedule. In addition to destinations already served, such as Boston, the South Korean metropolis of Seoul will be added to the portfolio of destinations served by this aircraft type. SWISS expects to receive a total of eight more aircraft of this model in the coming years. These new aircraft are a key component of the strategy to gradually replace older and fuel-intensive four-engine Airbus A340-300s and achieve greater operational efficiency on long-haul routes with more modern twin-engine aircraft.

A key feature of the new aircraft is the "Swiss Senses" cabin concept, which includes redesigned First and Business Class as well as upgrades to Premium Economy and Economy Class. The interior boasts a revised lighting concept and modernized in-flight entertainment systems. Parallel to the introduction of the A350 series, the company plans to begin cabin refurbishment on its existing Airbus A330 fleet this year. The aim of these measures is to standardize the onboard product across the entire long-haul fleet, ensuring a consistent level of comfort regardless of the aircraft type used.

Through the gradual delivery of additional Airbus A350-900s, the airline is strengthening its position at its Zurich hub. Industry analyses underscore that this capacity expansion is particularly necessary on high-growth routes to North America and Asia to meet the increased demand in the premium segment. The technical reliability of HB-IFA during its first 720.000 kilometers has paved the way for the swift integration of HB-IFB. By continuing this fleet program, the airline is preparing for increased competition in the global air travel market, with a focus on operational reliability and the modernization of cabin interiors.
