A couple from Linz were stranded after their vacation in the Dominican Republic due to a canceled flight from Frankfurt to Linz. Since it was a package tour, the tour operator should have covered the costs of food and accommodation. However, the tour operator referred the couple to the airline. Only after the Upper Austrian Chamber of Labor (AK) was involved and they threatened to sue did the couple receive the 376 euros they had advanced back.
The couple had booked the trip in January 2024 through a travel agency. The outbound flight and the stay went according to plan, but on the return journey the connecting flight was cancelled. The couple accepted an alternative flight the next day and had to spend a night in the hotel at the airport.
The AK consumer advocates determined that the tour operator must cover the costs. After threatening legal action, the airline reimbursed the costs, presumably at the tour operator's instigation. In addition, the AK experts demanded compensation of 1.200 euros for the canceled flight.
This year, the AK Upper Austria has already helped 127 consumers and their companions to receive compensation payments totaling 104.220 euros. The AK covers all costs for its members and works to ensure that airline passengers know their rights and can enforce them.
