Hamburg Airport is facing temporary restrictions in flight operations due to the annual maintenance and repair work on the runways. Runway 05/23 (Niendorf/Langenhorn) will be initially affected and will be closed to air traffic from May 7 to May 21, 2025. During this time, all arriving and departing aircraft will use runway 15/33, which will result in a change in flight routing over the Norderstedt and Alsterdorf areas.
The necessity of this work arises from the strict safety regulations of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). These guidelines require regular inspection and maintenance of the airfields to ensure safe air traffic at all times. As project manager Martin Borstelmann from Hamburg Airport explains, the measures include, among other things, the removal of rubber debris from the touchdown points, flushing the runway sluices, renewing the runway markings, and a detailed inspection of the electrical systems, particularly the runway lighting. Consolidating these various tasks into a single, continuous period is intended to minimize disruption to flight operations and passengers.
After the summer holidays, the second runway, 15/33 (Norderstedt/Alsterdorf), will be the focus of maintenance. This runway is scheduled to be closed from September 15 to 26, 2025. During this time, all flight movements will be diverted via the Niendorf and Langenhorn areas. Furthermore, the airport advises that further daily closures may be necessary at short notice throughout the year. These are intended to carry out urgent work on the electrical infrastructure and will be communicated promptly on the airport's website. Air travelers are asked to check accordingly.
