Flight safety of the future: intelligent pilot monitoring and autonomous emergency landing

Advertising

In a promising step towards further developing flight safety, the Swiss company Mindset Technologies AG and the Polish company Draco Aircraft have announced a close collaboration.

The goal of this collaboration between two emerging high-tech startups is to integrate Mindset Technologies' unique expertise in predicting pilot performance into Draco's state-of-the-art aircraft. This alliance represents a significant milestone in improving flight safety. Beyond mere monitoring, the partners aim to combine Mindset's digital capabilities with Draco's flight control system in such a way that the aircraft can land autonomously and without external assistance in an emergency. The collaboration was made possible in large part by the European Union Defence Innovation Scheme (EUDIS), into which both companies have been accepted.

Intelligent sensors for greater safety in the cockpit

Mindset Technologies, headquartered in Switzerland with a presence in Austria, specializes in the development of groundbreaking software solutions that use intelligent sensor technology to provide early warnings of pilot fatigue and performance degradation. This sophisticated technology measures various parameters, including eye movements and behavior patterns in the cockpit. By analyzing this data, the software can detect potential signs of fatigue or lapses in concentration at an early stage. The information obtained is crucial because it enables pilots to take appropriate action in a timely manner. This can include taking short breaks, adjusting flight strategy, or handing over control to a rested co-pilot.

The integration of this technology into Draco Aircraft's aircraft promises a significant increase in safety. Draco Aircraft's goal is to deliver a new flight experience with its Hyper-STOL (takeoff and landing in less than 30 meters) aircraft and exceptional climb performance, focusing on the highest level of safety for pilots and passengers. Johannes von Thadden, CEO of Draco Aircraft, emphasizes this goal: "We want to combine a new flight experience with maximum freedom and, at the same time, the highest possible level of safety. That's why we only work with the best partners worldwide. Mindset Technologies brings a revolutionary element to aviation: the certainty of being safe – no matter what happens. That's why we will also offer this solution to our customers." The combination of the extreme short takeoff and landing capability of the Draco aircraft with Mindset Technologies' predictive safety technology promises to significantly expand the application areas of these aircraft, especially in demanding environments.

Visionary goals: Autonomous emergency landings and digital integration

However, the ambitious goals of the collaboration extend far beyond pure pilot monitoring. Mindset Technologies and Draco Aircraft aim to combine Mindset's fully digital capabilities with Draco's flight control system in such a way that the aircraft can can land autonomously and without external assistanceThis vision, which pushes the boundaries of current aviation technology, could save lives in the event of a pilot's sudden incapacitation, for example, due to a medical emergency. Such an autonomous emergency landing system would raise flight safety to an unprecedented level and provide an additional layer of protection for passengers and crew. However, this requires a complex integration of artificial intelligence, sensors, and flight control systems, as well as extensive testing and certification by the relevant aviation authorities.

Aladár Tepelea, CEO of Mindset Technologies, expressed his enthusiasm at the signing of the agreement: "Mindset Technologies is proud to provide solutions for intelligent pilot status tracking – for increased safety and performance. This can save lives. The cooperation with an innovative aircraft manufacturer like Draco Aircraft gives us the opportunity to significantly expand the benefits of our technology." The opportunity to implement our own technology in real aircraft and fully exploit its potential is invaluable for a start-up.

The collaboration between Mindset Technologies and Draco Aircraft is also the result of a new European Union initiative, the European Union Defence Innovation Scheme (EUDIS). Both companies have been selected for this program and will benefit from targeted matchmaking through EUDIS. The EUDIS program aims to support innovative start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the field of defence technologies and strengthen collaboration between various stakeholders in Europe. Inclusion in this prestigious program underscores the relevance and potential of both companies' technologies.

Background of the companies: Expertise in safety and aircraft development

The Mindset Technologies AG Headquartered in Hergiswil, Switzerland, with a presence in Austria, it has established itself as a specialist in safety and performance solutions. The company serves customers in various sectors, including aviation, defense, sports, and industry. The company's proprietary software EPPS (Enhanced Pilot Performance System) is a core product of the company and is used in both civil and military aviation environments, as well as in flight control. Mindset Technologies' openness to collaboration has been demonstrated in this partnership with Draco Aircraft, demonstrating its willingness to pursue innovative approaches to problem-solving.

Draco Aircraft sp. z oo Based in Warsaw, Poland, the company aims to bring the hyper-STOL aircraft "Draco" to market. The development of aircraft with extremely short takeoff and landing characteristics is a promising niche market that opens up new possibilities for transport in difficult-to-access areas or on temporary runways. Hyper-STOL aircraft offer high flexibility and can be used in situations where conventional aircraft reach their limits. The company is currently open to investors, indicating the need for capital for the further development and market launch of the "Draco" aircraft. The integration of Mindset Technologies' safety technology could further increase the attractiveness to potential investors and strengthen confidence in the aircraft's safety.

The collaboration between these two forward-thinking companies has the potential to redefine flight safety and develop innovative solutions for the challenges of modern aviation. It is an example of how European startups can participate in the forefront of technological developments through targeted funding and strategic partnerships. The combination of intelligent pilot monitoring and the possibility of autonomous emergency landings represents a decisive step towards even safer and more reliable aviation.
