The airline Flydubai resumed scheduled service on the direct route between Salzburg and Dubai on June 27, 2026. The flight route had previously been temporarily suspended due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
Following negotiations between the US and Iran and the subsequent ceasefire, the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs (BMEIA) adjusted its security assessments for the region. The route is now being served up to three times a week, with Dubai serving as both a final destination and a key transit hub for Asia and Africa.
The return of the Arab airline has a direct impact on inbound tourism in the state of Salzburg. Holidaymakers from the United Arab Emirates traditionally use this connection for summer holidays in the Austrian Alps, which is a significant economic factor for the regional hotel and leisure industry. However, Salzburg Airport management, headed by Alexander Klaus, points out that the situation in the Middle East remains volatile despite the current easing of tensions, and therefore continues to recommend that travelers officially register their arrival abroad before departure.
In addition to the Middle East route, the regional airport is expanding its services to Eastern Europe for the upcoming winter season. The flight connection between Salzburg and the Kosovar capital, Pristina, which launched in April of this year, will be extended into the winter schedule due to consistently high demand and will now be offered year-round. GP Aviation operates this route twice a week. Demand is primarily driven by ethnic travel from the Kosovar community in western Austria and Bavaria, who rely on direct flights to visit relatives.
Aviation analysts view the flight schedule changes as necessary steps to diversify the risk profile of Salzburg Airport. While the tourist segment from the Gulf States is highly seasonal and vulnerable to foreign policy crises, commuter and visitor traffic to Southeast Europe offers a more stable revenue base for the airport company. Nevertheless, the economic development of the airport remains dependent on geopolitical stability at the destinations and the sustained purchasing power of the respective passenger groups.
