The volume of traffic at Munich Airport is currently increasing again significantly.

In July, for the first time in more than a year, over 50.000 passengers were counted at Munich Airport on two days. For the whole of July, Flughafen München GmbH (FMG) expects a passenger volume of over one million travelers.

The development of traffic in the first half of the year in Munich, as in international aviation as a whole, was still significantly influenced by the consequences of the pandemic. In the first six months of 2021 around 40.000 flights with almost 2,2 million passengers were registered. The volume of air freight flown was around 65.000 tons.

Demand is increasing continuously

As a look at the development of the monthly results shows, the demand in air traffic has been increasing steadily since the beginning of the year. From February onwards, both flight movements and passenger numbers increased continuously every month. In the second quarter, three times as many passengers and twice as many flights were handled compared to the first three months of the year. The upward trend is likely to continue in the further course of the second half of the year.

“We have now hopefully bottomed out and are in the process of leading Munich Airport further out of the crisis. I am confident that our airport will regain its function as a premium hub and that the volume of traffic will then again reach and exceed the old level, ”said Jost Lammers, CEO of Flughafen München GmbH.
