A serious incident involving a modern long-haul aircraft occurred at Frankfurt Airport on Thursday. A Lufthansa Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner parked at the gate suffered a sudden collapse of its nose landing gear. The aircraft, which was being prepared for scheduled flight LH450 to Los Angeles, abruptly dropped forward and struck the tarmac nose-first.
At the time of the incident, passenger boarding had not yet begun, but crew members and ground staff were already on board, some of whom sustained minor injuries. The wide-body aircraft, only a few months old, suffered significant structural damage, necessitating a comprehensive technical investigation and lengthy repairs. The planned transatlantic flight had to be canceled without replacement. The German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation has launched an investigation to determine the cause, which is still completely unclear.
Sudden drop in altitude at the departure gate
The incident occurred during routine flight preparation at one of the parking positions at Frankfurt Airport. The aircraft in question, registration D-ABPQ and named Herne, was scheduled to operate a flight to the American West Coast in the early afternoon. While the aircraft was being prepared for passenger boarding and ground handling procedures were underway, the locking mechanism or mechanical structure of the nose landing gear failed without warning.
Eyewitnesses and initial reports from the crash site describe a loud noise, followed by an immediate drop in the forward fuselage section. Because the main landing gear remained stable under the wings, the tail of the aircraft lifted slightly due to leverage, while the cockpit section came to rest directly on the concrete apron. Ground-connected support equipment, such as the passenger boarding bridge and any electrical cables, were also subjected to considerable stress by the aircraft's abrupt change in position.
Injured crew and ground staff
Although the passengers for the flight to Los Angeles were still waiting in the terminal building for their flight to be called at the time of the accident, a double-digit number of people were already inside the aircraft. These included the flight attendants, the cockpit crew, as well as technicians and cleaning staff who were busy with the final preparations for the long-haul flight.
The abrupt impact of the aircraft's nose on the ground caused the occupants to be violently shaken, completely unprepared. Several crew members and ground staff lost their footing and sustained injuries. The airport's medical rescue service and fire brigade responded immediately with a large contingent to treat and evacuate those affected. Initial assessments indicated that the injuries were minor, but some required outpatient treatment at the hospital. The affected terminal area was partially cordoned off for the duration of the rescue and recovery operations.
Significant damage to the aircraft structure
The visible damage to the Boeing 787-9 is unmistakable and affects sensitive areas of the airframe. Images from the crash site show that the underside fuselage fairing in the area of the nose wheel well is resting directly on the asphalt. The landing gear doors were forced outwards and deformed by the force of the impact. It must be assumed that the load-bearing bulkheads and the inner landing gear mounting points within the fuselage had to withstand enormous forces and suffered structural deformation.
Furthermore, initial visual inspections suggest that the extreme tilt of the aircraft may have caused the low-hanging engine nacelles of the two Rolls-Royce engines to touch the ground. If this is the case, the engines and their wing mountings would also require a comprehensive inspection for hairline cracks and deformation. The financial damage is likely to be in the tens of millions, as repairing composite materials, from which the Dreamliner is largely constructed, is considered technologically extremely challenging.
Impact on flight operations and the fleet
The immediate consequence of the incident was the cancellation of flight LH450. Passengers were assisted by ground staff at Frankfurt Airport and, where possible, rebooked on later flights or flights the following day. Since the airline's long-haul fleet is traditionally very busy during the summer months, the sudden cancellation of a scheduled aircraft presents a logistical challenge for flight planning.
The affected Boeing 787-9 is one of the newest additions to the company's fleet. The aircraft was delivered brand new by the manufacturer in January of this year and has therefore been in active scheduled service for less than six months. This sub-fleet is equipped with the airline's latest cabin product for Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy Class, but does not have a First Class cabin. The grounding of this modern aircraft is particularly significant, as it is intended for high-frequency routes with high comfort requirements and will now be out of service indefinitely.
Investigating authorities begin their work
The exact cause of the nose landing gear failure is currently still a matter of speculation. In civil aviation, modern landing gear systems are protected against unintentional buckling while stationary by multiple mechanical and hydraulic safety devices. During ground flight, physical locking pins, known as ground locks, are also typically used to prevent mechanical buckling.
The German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation dispatched experts to the scene of the incident on Thursday afternoon to secure evidence and analyze the flight data recorders and cockpit voice recorder. Investigators will have to determine whether a material defect in the hydraulic cylinders or the metal struts caused the malfunction, whether a maintenance or operational error by ground personnel led to the failure, or whether a software error in the control electronics resolved the blockage. Both the aircraft manufacturer Boeing and Lufthansa stated their full cooperation with the authorities but declined to provide further detailed statements at this time. Such an incident involving a nearly new aircraft is considered extremely unusual in the industry and will attract worldwide attention from regulatory authorities and other operators of this type of aircraft.
