Frankfurt am Main is setting a new standard in passenger security: The airport is the first in the world to regularly use the 360° walkthrough scanner QPS Walk2000 from Rohde & Schwarz for security checks. After a test phase lasting around a year on Concourse A in Terminal 1, the German Federal Police and Fraport, the airport operator, have approved the scanner for regular use. The QPS Walk2000 enables travelers to go through security checks more quickly and comfortably, as they no longer have to stand still in an uncomfortable position, but can walk through the scanner at a normal walking speed.
The scanner uses millimeter wave technology that penetrates the clothing of passengers. An avatar shows in real time where potentially dangerous objects are located. In the event of an alarm, security staff can specifically check the indicated location without having to scan the passenger again. This speeds up the entire process considerably. Frankfurt Airport, which transports around 18.000 passengers through this checkpoint every day, plans to expand the technology to other security lanes in Terminal 1 in the future and also introduce it in the new Terminal 3.
Fraport has invested around 22 million euros in recent years to equip the airport's security checks with modern CT technology and innovative lane designs. Since January 1, 2023, Fraport has also been responsible for the organization, administration and operation of around 160 security lanes at the airport. The German Federal Police will remain responsible for defining security requirements and supervision.
