Germany: GDL calls on train drivers to strike again

Rail travelers in Germany will soon need to have strong nerves again, because the GDL union is once again calling on the train drivers of Deutsche Bahn, Transdev and AKN Eisenbahn GmbH to go on strike.

The work stoppages are scheduled to begin on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at 22 p.m. and will provisionally last 00 hours. With this measure, the GDL wants to increase the pressure because it is demanding higher wages for train drivers in particular. It is to be expected that there will again be a significant impact on rail traffic, meaning that many trains will be canceled.

The railway companies affected assume that at least some kind of basic offer can be maintained. Travelers should therefore regularly inform themselves about the current status of their planned rail connection. If necessary, you should also consider switching to other modes of transport such as planes or buses.

The train drivers' union has been involved in a collective bargaining dispute for some time, which is being fought with tough conditions. The GDL has already called for a warning strike before the first round of negotiations. On November 24, 2024, trade unionist Claus Weselsky declared the talks had failed. There is also the fact that the GDL competes with the EVG. The last-mentioned employee representatives concluded a collective agreement with Deutsche Bahn in August 2023. But the demands of the GDL go far beyond this.
