While the aviation, hotel and tour operators are suffering massively from the corona crisis, campsites in Germany even posted record numbers. According to the Federal Association of the German Camping Industry, there were more than 2020 million overnight stays in July 8,5 alone - more than ever in a single month.

German accommodation providers suffer massively from the fact that international tourists and business travelers are much less on the go. This led to a decrease of 22 percent. Much could be intercepted by domestic travelers, but not all. Campsites grew during the crisis, and in some cases even increased by double digits. Due to the lockdown phase, the bottom line is still a minus of 34,6 percent.

A look at the campsites indirectly confirms the picture that the aviation industry had repeatedly sketched. Vacation travel by plane was much less popular in the busiest months of July and August 2020. Many Germans spent their vacations in Germany and, interestingly, liked to use campsites. Renters of caravans and mobile homes not only achieved record sales, but were largely fully booked. But the hype should only be short-term, because the main travel season is over. The circle to aviation is now closed again, because the demand in autumn and winter is also low on German campsites. However, it will be exciting to see whether many Germans will remain loyal to their newly discovered camping in the summer of 2021 or whether they will book a flight again. It is precisely on this decision, which is difficult to predict, that the capacity planning of many airlines depends.
