Germany: Three days of rail strike ahead

Another train drivers' strike is imminent in Germany. Passengers of Deutsche Bahn AG in particular have to expect significant restrictions, as many trains are expected to be canceled again. This time the GDL union is calling for a three-day work stoppage.

At the end of last week, the board of Deutsche Bahn AG submitted a new offer. This was rejected by employee representatives and publicly commented on as “poisoning”. The result of this: Those train drivers who are members of the GDL union will be called on a warning strike from Wednesday, January 10, 2024.

In passenger transport, work should be stopped during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. For the time being, the industrial action is limited until Friday, January 18, 2024, 18 p.m. During this period and in the hours afterwards, many cancellations and significant delays are to be expected. Travelers should therefore repeatedly inform themselves about the current status of their train connection and consider switching to other modes of transport such as buses or planes if necessary.

The work stoppages in freight transport are scheduled to start a little earlier, but passengers will not be affected. The GDL union announced before Christmas 2024 that there could be longer strikes in the new year if an agreement cannot be reached with the railway. The work stoppages take place in both local and long-distance transport and often result in a large number of train connections being canceled. The railway will publish an emergency timetable.
