Sheep are once again being used as lawn mowers at Nuremberg Airport this year. The airport currently has around 700 animals “work on” the lawns. These come from a specialist company located near the airport.
The grassy areas of Nuremberg Airport are a veritable restaurant for the sheep, because the animals feed mainly on grass. The airport benefits from the use of the four-legged friends, because it saves on staff and fuel for classic lawn mowers. The mowing campaign was successfully carried out in cooperation with the landscape conservation association and the environmental office of the city of Nuremberg and is to take place annually from now on.
“For Nuremberg Airport, the use of the flock of sheep offers a sustainable form of landscape conservation and promotes biodiversity at the location. The project creates clear synergies between the agriculturally operated areas of the garlic farmers and an industrial airport. A mosaic of diverse habitats is created through biting and representation, which is not the case with mechanical processes,” said Nuremberg Airport in a media statement.
