Hamburg Airport is testing autonomous security robots to monitor the outdoor area.

Hamburg Airport has launched a pilot project to increase aviation security and is now testing the use of autonomous security robots. The self-driving machines will support the monitoring of the airport's extensive grounds in the coming months.

The robots, manufactured by the specialized Swiss company Ascento, are designed for patrolling the kilometer-long security fence that separates the airport grounds from the public. The machines are programmed to register potential damage to the barriers or unauthorized approaches and transmit this data in real time to the security service's operations center.

The trial is initially planned for a duration of four months and primarily serves the purpose of technological evaluation under real-world operating conditions. David Liebert, the head of airport operations in Hamburg, emphasized during the presentation that the robots are intended to complement, not replace, human security personnel. The aim of the trial is to gain sound insights into the extent to which camera-based robotic assistance systems can reduce the response times of security forces and optimize the comprehensive monitoring of critical infrastructure.

The compact security robots' technical specifications include high-resolution camera systems as well as thermal imaging and infrared sensors that deliver precise images even in complete darkness or adverse weather conditions. Thanks to sophisticated software and integrated navigation algorithms, the devices can independently detect and analyze obstacles on their patrol route and navigate around them without human intervention. The dense data transmission is intended to uncover vulnerabilities in perimeter security before they can be exploited by third parties, thereby strengthening the overall resilience of the North German aviation hub.

The current test run is directly related to the tightened security requirements following a serious incident in November 2023. At that time, an armed man, attempting to abduct a child, managed to break through security barriers with a car and reach the highly secured apron of the airport, resulting in a large-scale police operation lasting several hours and the complete suspension of flight operations. This incident triggered a nationwide debate about structural deficiencies in the security of German commercial airports and forced the operating companies to make massive investments in modern surveillance technologies.
