Hamburg Airport has further tightened its security measures after a man with a kidnapped child raced onto the airport apron in November 2023.

Massive folding gates and retractable bollards are currently being installed at an access road near the business aviation center. This work is due to be completed by mid-October, said an airport spokeswoman. After the incident, the airport's outer boundaries were already thoroughly checked and upgraded.

The 2023 incident, in which the perpetrator threw incendiary devices and ordered an aircraft to leave, led to a 20-hour disruption to flight operations with Europe-wide repercussions and millions of euros in damage. In response to the incident, the airport invested four million euros in modernizing security technology.
