On Friday, the "dronePORT" was opened in the Port of Hamburg, a special area for controlling drone flights and mobile sensors. This ground infrastructure, which is operated by the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) in cooperation with Hamburg Aviation and the Hamburg Police, is the first of its kind in Europe for remote-controlled drone services beyond the line of sight, according to HPA Managing Director Jens Meier.
The "dronePORT" is intended to enable new working methods for infrastructure and traffic management through the use of drones, robot dogs, and swimming and underwater drones. This is a significant step for Hamburg, emphasized Meier.
According to HPA, the advantages of the new technologies lie in modern and cost-efficient data collection for HPA departments, civil protection and the police. They also contribute to reducing CO2 emissions. HPA plans to use the drones for inspections of infrastructure objects such as bridges and large areas.
The Hamburg police also see great potential in drone technology. Police President Falk Schnabel explained that drones can already provide valuable assistance in the search for missing people, traffic control and at major events. The "dronePORT" will have a lasting impact on police work in the future and sets innovative standards for the use of low-emission and low-noise resources. With the opening of the "dronePORT", Hamburg is positioning itself as a pioneer in the integration of modern drone technologies for urban security and administrative tasks.
