Hannover Airport and Enercity have launched a joint pilot project to utilize unused areas for energy generation.

A new photovoltaic system covering 1.250 square meters near the northern runway generates an output of around 120 kilowatts peak. The aim of the three-year project is to investigate the ecological impact on the surrounding area and the possible expansion of the system. The expected CO₂ savings are around 43 tons per year. Successful tests could lead to the expansion of the system.
