Helvetic Airways takes over numerous flight connections for Lufthansa from Munich

Advertising

The Swiss regional airline Helvetic Airways has taken over flight operations on a total of 19 routes for Deutsche Lufthansa since the beginning of May 2026.

This deployment is taking place under a so-called wet-lease agreement at the Munich hub and, according to Aeroroutes.com, is initially limited to the end of June. Helvetic Airways is providing both the aircraft and the crew to compensate for operational bottlenecks at the German airline. The primary aircraft used is the Embraer E195-E1, an aircraft type specifically designed for shorter regional routes and medium passenger capacities.

The area of operation includes both national and international destinations. Within Germany, the Swiss airline serves the cities of Dresden, Hamburg, Münster/Osnabrück, and Stuttgart on behalf of Lufthansa. A particular focus is also placed on connecting the North Frisian island of Sylt, which experiences high seasonal demand for travel. By outsourcing these routes to its partner Helvetic, Lufthansa can concentrate its own fleet on other, busier main routes and increase the stability of the flight schedule at its Munich hub.

Internationally, Helvetic Airways will serve 14 destinations as part of this cooperation. These include major European cities such as Amsterdam, Budapest, and Prague. The plan is for some of these routes to be operated only sporadically in either May or June to manage peak booking periods. The use of wet-lease partners is a common practice in the aviation industry to respond quickly to temporary fleet shortages, maintenance schedules, or staffing gaps without having to cancel flights for passengers.

Additional market analyses highlight the long-standing collaboration between Lufthansa and Helvetic Airways, as the Swiss airline is known for its punctuality and the modern standards of its Embraer fleet. While Lufthansa has faced increasing capacity issues in the past due to delivery delays of new aircraft, such partnerships offer the necessary flexibility. For Munich Airport, this increased commitment ensures reliable feeder services for its long-haul network, thus safeguarding the attractiveness of the Bavarian hub in international competition.
