Historic passenger record at Nuremberg Airport for its 70th anniversary

Nuremberg Airport concluded the calendar year 2025 with a significant historic achievement, setting a new record in its seven-decade history. On New Year's Eve, the airport surpassed its previous record from 2018 by reaching 4,5 million passengers, massively strengthening the Franconian air traffic hub's position in national comparison.

While the German air transport market as a whole is showing a rather subdued recovery, Nuremberg Airport recorded growth of twelve percent compared to the previous year. This upward trend is primarily attributable to a consistent expansion of its tourist offerings and strategic cooperation with low-cost carriers. With the stationing of additional aircraft and the launch of new international routes in 2026, the airport is setting the course for a continuation of this expansion and solidifying its role as a central gateway for the metropolitan region.

The official welcome for the record-breaking passenger took place on the morning of December 31, 2025. Petra Beer and Waldemar Strzelczyk, a couple from near Erlangen, were surprised at the check-in counter for Corendon Airlines flight XR563 to Gran Canaria. In recognition of this milestone, the travelers received a voucher for complimentary access to the exclusive Dürer Lounge for a period of 4,5 years. The timing of this record underscores the importance of winter tourism, which, alongside the traditional summer season, has become a stable pillar of the airline's operations. The Canary Islands are traditionally among the most popular destinations in the region's winter flight schedule.

Growth dynamics far above the national average

The statistical analysis for 2025 highlights the special role that Nuremberg Airport currently plays in the German market. While the average growth rate at German commercial airports was only around 3,5 percent up to November 2025, Nuremberg achieved a growth rate of twelve percent, many times higher. According to airport managing director Dr. Michael Hupe, this success is the result of a targeted sales strategy. By attracting and expanding the capacity of leisure airlines, the deficit in domestic business travel, which is still noticeable at many other locations, has been more than compensated for. The Nuremberg metropolitan region benefits from its purchasing power and the high propensity to travel among its residents, making it an increasingly attractive location for airlines.

That the milestone passenger traveled on board a Corendon Airlines aircraft is no coincidence, but rather reflects the close relationship between the airport and the airline. Corendon Airlines has been active at the location since 2005 and has operated its own base in Nuremberg since 2019. This presence has enabled the airline to respond flexibly to increasing demand. The airline has announced plans to further expand its operations in 2026. From May onwards, a second aircraft will be permanently based in Nuremberg, increasing the number of holiday destinations offered to a total of 14. This expansion of capacity is a clear commitment to the Franconian market and ensures stable revenue for the airport through takeoff and landing fees as well as ground handling services.

Expansion of the route network and outlook for 2026

Looking ahead to the coming fiscal year, expansion plans are continuing. The 2026 flight schedule not only includes increased capacity on established routes but also integrates entirely new destinations into the portfolio. With the addition of connections to Beirut in Lebanon, Bodrum in Turkey, and Rabat in Morocco, Nuremberg Airport is opening up new markets in North Africa and the Middle East. These new destinations cater to both the demand for individual tourist travel and the growing segment of visits by citizens with a migration background to the region. The inclusion of Rabat, the Moroccan capital, is considered a particularly prestigious addition, further enhancing the airport's international connectivity.

Besides outbound traffic, meaning travel by Franconians to destinations around the world, the airport is playing an increasingly important role in inbound tourism. The rising passenger numbers are bringing more international guests directly to the Nuremberg metropolitan region, which has positive effects on the local hospitality, retail, and service sectors. The airport thus acts as an engine for the economic development of Northern Bavaria. Reaching the 4,5 millionth passenger is not just a statistical milestone, but also documents the successful transformation of the airport from a purely transportation hub to a high-performing service center that is holding its own in national competition despite challenging conditions.

Structural change in the air transport market

The development in Nuremberg exemplifies how the air transport market in Germany is undergoing structural changes. While major airports like Frankfurt or Munich often struggle with capacity limits and complex transfer processes, regional airports like Nuremberg offer added value for both passengers and airlines through short distances, fast turnaround times, and a focused destination strategy.

The low-cost and leisure airline segment has proven resilient and forms the backbone of the current record results. Airport officials emphasize that infrastructure modernization, such as investments in the terminal buildings and digital services, has been crucial in handling this high passenger volume smoothly.

Optimism for the coming decade

Riding the wave of a record-breaking 2025, Nuremberg Airport is entering its eighth decade. Forecasts from aviation associations support the optimism of Nuremberg's management. Demand for point-to-point connections within Europe and to the Mediterranean region is expected to remain stable. For Nuremberg, this presents an opportunity to aim for the five million passenger mark in the medium term.

Continuously adapting the flight schedule to the needs of the regional economy and holiday travelers remains the central task. The historic milestone at the turn of the year is therefore not only a look back at past successes, but also the starting signal for a new era of growth at Nuremberg Airport.
