On August 3, 1954, Iberia operated its first flight between Madrid and New York with a Super Constellation. Today, 70 years later, the Spanish airline offers two daily flights on this route. Tickets at the time cost 436 dollars in first class and 334 dollars in economy class. Today, tickets are available from 234 euros in economy class and 1486 euros in business class.
In the first five months of operation, Iberia transported almost 2.000 passengers, and the following year that number rose to 7.300. In 2024, Iberia plans to offer 1,7 million seats for travel between Madrid and eight destinations in the United States.
Iberia currently operates the Madrid-New York route with the Airbus 350-900, which can accommodate up to 348 passengers. In addition to New York, Iberia flies to seven other destinations in the USA, including Miami, Boston and Los Angeles.
The introduction of the Super Constellation in the 1950s enabled Iberia to establish regular transatlantic connections and marked an important step in commercial aviation.
