Klagenfurt Airport is embarking on a comprehensive modernization phase designed to reposition Carinthia as an aviation hub, both technologically and economically. During a recent site visit by Deputy Governor Martin Gruber, the progress of several infrastructure projects was presented, with significant progress expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2026.
The investment program includes the construction of a new helicopter base for emergency services, a modern hangar, and an exclusive business terminal for general aviation. These construction projects are complemented by positive growth in passenger traffic and a large-scale real estate development project, creating new business opportunities for aviation-related companies and investors across more than 420.000 square meters. The aim of these measures is to improve the accessibility of the Carinthian economic region and increase the logistical efficiency of the site through new access roads and modernized handling areas.
Expansion of the operational infrastructure and the general aviation sector
A key aspect of the current construction work is the development of the southern airport areas. Previously, these areas were not directly accessible by vehicle, hindering their commercial development. The construction of a new access road will eliminate this logistical obstacle, making the areas attractive for commercial projects. Simultaneously, the modernization of the terminal is progressing. The departure area is currently being redesigned so that, in addition to traditional passenger handling, it can also be used as a large-scale event venue. This multifunctional approach is intended to open up additional revenue streams for the airport beyond its core operations.
A specialized helicopter base, designed according to the latest technical standards, is being built for emergency services and air rescue operations. This project is complemented by a new hangar providing additional space for aircraft. Of particular note is the new business terminal, specifically tailored to the needs of general aviation. With this facility, Klagenfurt aims to attract more private and business pilots for whom fast and discreet ground handling is crucial. During his visit, Martin Gruber emphasized that these investments represent a decisive milestone in securing Carinthia's long-term competitiveness as a business location and creating high-quality jobs in the region.
Growth in scheduled and charter services for 2026
The airport's operations are benefiting from increased flight frequencies from major airline partners. Significant passenger growth is projected for 2026. Eurowings will increase its service to Cologne from two to three weekly flights. Low-cost carrier Ryanair is also considerably expanding its operations in Klagenfurt. Its connection to the important hub of London will be increased by 50 percent, offering three flights per week. The popular route to Mallorca will be served with five weekly flights in the summer schedule, providing travelers with greater flexibility.
In the charter sector, Greece specialist Springer Reisen is setting new trends. The number of flights from Klagenfurt will be doubled: In addition to the existing connections to Paros and Naxos, direct flights to Skiathos will be introduced for the first time in summer 2026. The partnership with Austrian Airlines remains essential for international connections. With up to 13 weekly flights to the Vienna hub, Klagenfurt will be connected to the Lufthansa Group's global route network. This gives passengers access to over 80 destinations worldwide with short layover times. Maximilian Wildt, Managing Director of the airport, sees this development as confirmation of the increasing demand and improved connectivity of Carinthia as a tourist destination.
Strategic land development and investor search
A project of supra-regional importance is the development of the airport's own properties. With a total area of 420.000 square meters, the airport boasts one of the largest contiguous development areas in the country. Since the launch of the Europe-wide tender in September 2025, there has been strong demand from potential investors. The unique selling point of these sites lies in the possibility of direct access to the runway, which is of immense interest, particularly to companies in the aviation logistics sector, maintenance companies, and flight schools.
Martin Payer, CEO of Kärntner Beteiligungsverwaltung, expressed optimism regarding the further timeline. The first awards of long-term usage rights are expected to be finalized in the first half of 2026. The selection of partners will take place through a transparent, multi-stage process that prioritizes the optimal development of the site. The proximity to Klagenfurt's city center and the direct connection to the main road network make the areas an attractive location for businesses that extend beyond the aviation sector and enable synergies with regional industry.
Future prospects for the regional airport
The combination of structural modernization, capacity expansion in the flight schedule, and the strategic development of land is intended to put Klagenfurt Airport on a more stable financial footing. While the winter months are characterized by direct connections such as those to Hamburg, the strategy for the summer season focuses on strengthening outbound tourism and facilitating inbound travel for international guests.
The airport is thus positioning itself not merely as an infrastructure facility for passenger traffic, but as an integral component of Carinthia's economic development policy. The ongoing projects at the helicopter base and the business terminal are scheduled for largely completion by the end of 2026 to ensure full operational capacity in time for the next peak season. The coming months will reveal which investors will be awarded the contracts for the sought-after sites and how they will contribute to the further diversification of the business location around Klagenfurt Airport.
