Lufthansa Cargo markets cargo space from Ita Airways

Advertising

Lufthansa Cargo will market selected cargo capacities of the Italian airline Ita Airways starting in June 2025. As announced by Lufthansa's cargo subsidiary, Lufthansa Cargo will add its so-called AWB prefix to Ita Airways cargo flights between Rome-Fiumicino and the Brazilian metropolises of São Paulo (GRU) and Rio de Janeiro (GIG). Other Ita Airways routes are not affected by this agreement for the time being.

This step is part of a closer cooperation between the Lufthansa Group and Ita Airways, in which the German airline holds a minority stake and is seeking a full takeover. The marketing of the cargo capacities is a further building block in the integration of Ita Airways into the Lufthansa Group. By adding the Lufthansa Cargo AWB prefix, freight forwarders and logistics companies can more easily handle cargo on these Ita Airways routes via the Lufthansa Cargo booking system.

The expansion of cooperation in the cargo sector indicates a gradual integration of the two airlines. Lufthansa and Ita Airways had previously expanded a codeshare agreement in passenger traffic and coordinated flight schedules between their hubs. The current inclusion of cargo capacity strengthens Lufthansa Cargo's position in traffic to South America and expands its offerings for its customers. Following the complete takeover of Ita Airways, cooperation in the cargo sector is expected to be further intensified, and the entire Ita Airways route network will be integrated into Lufthansa Cargo's cargo offering.
