Lufthansa Technik has maintained a large maintenance base on the site of Malta's Luqa airport for over 20 years. This will now be further developed into the European competence center for the overhaul of wide-body aircraft.

The portfolio is being expanded to include base maintenance for Boeing 787s. LTM is currently investing several million euros in training its technical experts, tools and materials. The first aircraft is expected to arrive in the hangars in spring 2024.

“It is a pleasure to begin my role as the new CEO of Lufthansa Technik Malta with such an important investment in our company. “With the expansion of our portfolio, we will not only become the center of excellence for widebody aircraft overhaul in Europe to serve our Boeing 787 operators in the region, but we will also strengthen our local presence and create new opportunities for current and future employees,” said Maria Cilia, Head of Base Maintenance Services and CEO of Lufthansa Technik Malta.

Lufthansa Technik Malta was founded in 2002 as a joint venture between Lufthansa Technik and Air Malta. The company, based at Malta International Airport, offers comprehensive maintenance and overhaul services for short-haul Airbus A320 and A320neo aircraft as well as long-haul Airbus A330, A340 and A350 aircraft. LTM employs around 500 aviation experts and serves a large number of international customers.

LTM's range of services has expanded over the years to include extensive base maintenance services. The company was also the first to operate a Lufthansa Technik Innovation Bay, where new technologies were tested - from drone-based aircraft fuselage inspections to mobile 3D scanners and exoskeletons.

“Building on the significant role that Lufthansa Technik Malta has played within our base maintenance network over the past two decades, our investment in a dedicated overhaul line for Boeing 787 aircraft will further cement the company’s position as a center of excellence for modern widebody aircraft. With this development, we can respond even more flexibly to the needs of our customers and take advantage of the remarkable efficiency and reliability of LTM,” says Alexander Feuersänger, Vice President & COO Aircraft Maintenance Services at Lufthansa Technik.
