Lufthansa Technik AG, a global leader in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of aircraft and aircraft components (MRO), is setting a strong example of expansion and innovation by establishing a new facility in Portugal. A state-of-the-art plant with an area of 2027 square meters will be built in Santa Maria da Feira, near Porto, by the end of 54.000. This project underlines the importance of the Portuguese location for the company's strategic growth.
With this investment, Lufthansa Technik is not only creating 700 new jobs, but is also strengthening Portugal's competitiveness in the aviation sector. The partnership with the Portuguese economic development agency AICEP and the close cooperation with local authorities have significantly supported the realization of this ambitious project. Portugal's geographical location within the EU, the stable political landscape and the availability of qualified workers also contributed to the choice of location.
Technological excellence and global networking
The new plant will be equipped with the latest technologies in the MRO industry. This will enable Lufthansa Technik to meet the increasing demands of its more than 800 international customers and to further expand its position as a global market leader. Harald Gloy, Chief Operating Officer of Lufthansa Technik, emphasized that this expansion is crucial to increase capacity and continue to guarantee the highest standards.
Education and training as the key to success
A key element of the project is the construction of a training center from 2025. This center will prepare new employees for their tasks so that production can begin as planned once the facility is completed. Specialists are sought in areas such as mechanics, electronics and engineering.
Local and international reactions
The Portuguese Minister of Economic Affairs, Pedro Reis, highlighted the investment as a contribution to the re-industrialization of Portugal. Mayor Amadeu Albergaria sees it as an opportunity for economic and social stimulus in the region. Lufthansa Technik's commitment is also seen as an expression of trust in the Portuguese infrastructure and workforce.
