Lufthansa cancels planned Innsbruck-Frankfurt route – airport surprised

Advertising

The Lufthansa will not resume the flight connection between Innsbruck and Frankfurt am Main, originally planned for 1 July 2025. This is reported by "ORF Tirol". The route, which is operated by the regional airline SkyAlps The route, which was to have been served on behalf of Lufthansa, will not be offered in the current summer flight schedule or in the winter of 2025/2026. Lufthansa explained the decision to the broadcaster with "economic efficiency and seasonality."

This development came as a surprise at Innsbruck Airport. A spokesperson for the airport explained that they had recently been working intensively toward resuming this connection. The route to Frankfurt has traditionally been an important connection for Innsbruck Airport, as it not only offers travelers a direct connection to a major German metropolis but also provides access to Lufthansa's intercontinental hub in Frankfurt.

The cancellation follows problems that SkyAlps had with the Italian aviation authority in the spring ENAC In February, ENAC discovered faulty maintenance records at a SkyAlps service provider, which led to the initial withdrawal of seven of the airline's turboprop aircraft from service. Dash-8SkyAlps' aircraft are registered in the Maltese registry. However, SkyAlps has since been able to operate most of its aircraft again, which may have further increased Innsbruck Airport's surprise at the cancellation of the service.

Lufthansa's decision is likely to impact the travel plans of many passengers who relied on this direct connection or wanted to use it for connecting flights. It also underscores the sensitivity of regional air traffic and the challenges airlines face in maintaining the viability and profitability of certain routes, especially when third parties are involved in operational operations.
