The airlines of the Lufthansa Group have joined an initiative led by the manufacturer Airbus, which is intended to filter carbon dioxide from the air and then store it permanently.

The Lufthansa Group has now concluded a contract with Airbus for the advance purchase of verified and permanent emission reduction credits for 40.000 tonnes of CO2 from DACCS technology. The certificates will be available from 2026 and will be issued by Airbus partner 1PointFive. An annual purchase of so-called “carbon removal credits” for 10.000 tons of CO2 over a period of four years was agreed. The signing of the contract follows a joint declaration of intent from 2022.

“The Lufthansa Group is strongly committed to making air transport more sustainable and achieving net zero CO2050 emissions by 2. This includes billions of dollars invested in the continued modernization of our fleet and our strong commitment to sustainable aviation fuels. Technical solutions to remove CO2 from the atmosphere, such as advanced and direct processes for capturing and storing CO2, will play a complementary role in achieving our decarbonization goals,” says Caroline Drischel, Head of Corporate Responsibility at the Lufthansa Group.
