The luxury travel market in Austria is undergoing a profound structural change towards spontaneous and tailor-made holiday planning.
As current data from the tour operator Airtours, the luxury brand of the TUI Group, shows for the current summer season 2026, the desire for maximum flexibility during travel is replacing the classic package holiday, planned months in advance, in the premium segment. Demand is shifting massively towards ultra-personalized experiences, where daily itineraries, routes, or private guides are flexibly adapted on-site to weather conditions or personal preferences. The Airtours private travel division is particularly benefiting from this trend, growing significantly faster than the rest of the overall tourism market in Austria, with an increase of over 20 percent.
Greece remains the undisputed top destination for Austrian luxury travelers this summer. Nearly one in three bookings is for exclusive hideaways in Crete, the Cyclades, or smaller Greek islands. Classic premium destinations like the Maldives, Southern Italy, and the Balearic Islands follow in the rankings. Mauritius, the Seychelles, Morocco, and Canada are experiencing the highest growth rates in long-haul travel, with Canada gaining particular momentum thanks to nature tours along its east coast during the autumn foliage season. A significant shift is also evident in the US market: for the first time, bookings for Hawaii surpass those for the classic city destination of New York City, as travelers increasingly demand private surfing lessons, volcano expeditions, and Polynesian culture instead of mere sightseeing. For extraordinary, authentic experiences, such as private safaris in Tanzania or Namibia, clients are increasingly willing to forgo traditional hotel comforts in favor of nature-oriented accommodations in remote regions.
The luxury cruise segment is developing just as dynamically, generating a 36 percent increase in bookings for Airtours Cruises. This market is characterized by very short-term booking decisions made within three to six months of departure, with the Mediterranean remaining the most popular destination. New, design-oriented luxury ships and megayachts such as the Silver Ray, Explora III, Emerald Kaia, and the Regent Seven Seas Prestige are specifically targeting younger and lifestyle-oriented demographics. A completely new market segment is also emerging with the entry of renowned hotel chains into the maritime hotel sector, such as with the Ritz-Carlton Luminara. These hotel yachts offer a private yacht atmosphere, longer stays in exclusive ports, and specifically attract repeat customers of luxury resorts who are discovering cruising as a new form of travel. On the European mainland, destinations in Northern Europe are also experiencing significant growth thanks to special tours in Norway and the Scandinavian capitals.
To further strengthen customer loyalty in the highly competitive premium market, tour operators are expanding their services along the entire logistics chain. From a defined minimum travel price of €15.000 per booking, the provider now integrates complimentary extras such as parking at Vienna Airport, first-class rail travel, exclusive lounge access, and private chauffeur services. In addition, a strategic partnership has been initiated with the frequent flyer program Miles & More, allowing customers to collect regular award miles when booking individual trips and cruises. This bundling of convenience services before departure and the focus on unpredictable experiences at the destination reflect the changing demands of an affluent clientele for whom time and individuality represent the new core components of the concept of luxury.
