Münster/Osnabrück Airport (FMO) and the duty-free and catering service provider Smartseller have extended their existing cooperation by ten years ahead of schedule.
As the contracting parties announced on June 3, 2026, at the airport headquarters in Greven, the new agreement now runs long-term until 2036. The partnership between the two companies began in 2020. At the start of the 2023 summer season, the service provider implemented a new, integrated store concept at the regional airport, combining the previously strictly separated retail and food service areas into a single space.
Smartseller's business model, a joint venture between travel shopping specialist Gebr. Heinemann and travel catering company Casualfood, is based on a combination of travel retail, food and beverage, and convenience items. Occupying approximately 600 square meters directly behind the central security checkpoint, the store offers passengers an unobstructed view of the airport apron. An integrated regional section, the so-called "Local Sense" area, also markets typical regional products and specialties from the Münsterland and Westphalia regions to emphasize the local identity of the departure airport.
As part of securing the long-term viability of the location, the partners are planning a gradual expansion of services. The company already implemented a first expansion step at the end of 2025 with the commissioning of a fully automated kiosk module in the non-Schengen area of the airport. This sales module is open 24/7 and ensures uninterrupted service for passengers on international routes outside the Schengen Area, even outside of regular shop opening hours. FMO Managing Director Andrés Heinemann interpreted the early contract extension as proof of the airport's economic stability and positive passenger traffic development.
The expansion of commercial services at Münster/Osnabrück Airport is part of a general trend at German regional airports, where revenues from non-aviation businesses are playing an increasingly important role in covering infrastructure costs. By modernizing terminal areas and making sales hours more flexible, FMO management is aiming to further enhance the airport's appeal to leisure and business travelers in Northwest Germany and the neighboring Netherlands.
