On the way from Dubai to London-Gatwick, the Airbus A380 operated by Emirates Airline with the registration A6-EOZ had to make an unscheduled stopover at Munich Airport on September 12, 2023. The background is a medical emergency that occurred on board.

The superjumbo was on its way to London-Gatwick under flight number EK15. Since a passenger was anything but well, the captain decided to report a medical emergency and request a landing at the nearest airport suitable for Airbus A380s. Shortly before landing, which took place at 12:49 local time, the transponder code was changed to 7700. This is the indication of a general emergency.

A spokesman for the largest airline in the United Arab Emirates said of the unscheduled stopover in Munich: "Emirates flight EK 15 from Dubai to London Gatwick on September 12th was diverted to Munich due to a passenger's medical emergency."

A medical team was already on the ground ready for the sick passenger. This took over the traveler to take him to a nearby hospital for further treatment. After a while, the long-haul aircraft left Munich Airport again and continued the flight to London-Gatwick. There was a delay due to the medical emergency.

It often happens that medical emergencies of various kinds occur on board commercial aircraft. Pretty much everything has happened, from heart attacks to sudden attacks of weakness to the birth of babies. Depending on the severity, the captain must then decide whether the flight can continue or whether an immediate landing is necessary for emergency treatment. Unfortunately, it has also happened that all the efforts of crews, passengers and medical teams on the ground were in vain because the passengers did not survive. Fortunately, deaths are extremely rare.
