Memmingen Airport has developed into a major transportation hub in southern Germany in recent years. What once served as a military airfield is now a dynamically growing international airport. The steadily increasing number of passengers presents new challenges not only to the airport's operators but also to the security authorities. Given the airport's growing importance for international air traffic, the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior has now decided to significantly strengthen the border police force on site.
Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) announced that the former border police unit at Memmingen Airport has been transformed into an independent border police inspectorate. This is a necessary step to efficiently manage the extensive tasks in the area of entry controls. The number of border police officers deployed has already increased from 50 to 85 and is expected to increase to around 2030 by 130.
From military airfield to international airport
Memmingen Airport has undergone a remarkable development. Originally built as an air base for the German Air Force, it served military purposes for a long time before being converted to civil aviation after the end of the Cold War. Since its official opening as a regional airport in 2004, the airport has recorded steadily increasing passenger numbers.
Today, Memmingen is Bavaria's third-largest commercial airport after Munich and Nuremberg. Its strategic location in the Allgäu region, near the border with Baden-Württemberg, makes it particularly attractive for travelers from southern Germany as well as for passengers from Austria and Switzerland. Thanks to numerous connections to destinations throughout Europe, especially Spain, Italy, Eastern Europe, and the Mediterranean, the airport is a popular alternative to major German airports for many travelers.
The numbers speak for themselves: While only around 2010 passengers were handled in 900.000, the number of passengers rose to over 2024 million in 3,2. However, this rapid development also brings with it challenges, particularly in the areas of security and border controls.
Expansion of border police: necessary measure or excessive caution?
As the airport's importance grows, so do its security requirements. The Bavarian Border Police is responsible for entry controls at Nuremberg and Memmingen airports, as well as at several smaller airfields. At Munich Airport, however, the Federal Police assumes these duties.
The decision to significantly expand the border police unit in Memmingen has met with mixed reactions. While Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann emphasizes that the measure is necessary to efficiently control the increasing number of travelers, there are also critical voices questioning the necessity of such a massive expansion.
Some experts point out that the police presence at smaller airports is often disproportionate to the actual threat level. Nevertheless, the Interior Ministry emphasizes that the measure is necessary to be prepared for the airport's long-term growth and to be able to respond appropriately to potential security risks.
Economic factor for the region
Memmingen Airport is no longer just a transport hub, but also a significant economic factor for the entire region. The airport's growth is creating numerous jobs both at the airport and in the surrounding area.
The increasing number of passengers and flight connections also contributes to the region's economic development, particularly in the tourism sector. For many companies in the area, the airport is an important location advantage, as it provides fast connections to European economic centers.
Even though the expansion of the border police force is causing controversy, it remains undisputed that Memmingen Airport will continue to grow in importance. With the planned increase in police presence, the Bavarian state government aims to ensure that the airport continues to operate smoothly and safely in the future.
