Munich Airport has become the first German air traffic hub to achieve the “Level 3” certification level within the framework of the international quality program “Airport Customer Experience Accreditation”.
This award, presented by the global airport association Airports Council International (ACI), recognizes strategic measures aimed at optimizing the overall passenger experience. In an increasingly competitive European air travel market, service quality, beyond mere handling efficiency, is becoming increasingly important for major hubs to retain passenger traffic in the long term.
The accreditation program developed by ACI is the world's only procedure in the aviation industry that analyzes holistic customer experience management at airports. It is divided into five successive levels. Level 3, achieved by the major Bavarian airport, requires that the company has established a comprehensive service strategy that not only encompasses the airport company's operational processes but also actively involves external partner companies, authorities, and all ground staff at the location. The auditors assess, among other things, the service offerings, the quality of the passenger experience in the terminals, and the feedback systems along the entire travel chain.
Jost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport GmbH and current President of the global association ACI World, emphasized the importance of this continuous development for Munich's status as a premium hub. ACI World's Director General, Justin Erbacci, recognized the airport in an official statement as an industry leader in quality management. Reaching Level 3 is also economically significant for Munich Airport, as revenue growth in non-aviation sectors, such as retail and food service, is directly correlated with passenger dwell time and satisfaction in the terminal areas.
The awarding of the certificate comes at a time of significant capacity increases at Munich Airport, which is experiencing substantial growth, particularly in intercontinental traffic to North America and Asia. To meet the demands of international transit passengers, the airport is continuously investing in digital processes, such as biometric access controls and modernized security areas designed to minimize waiting times. With this new certification, Munich Airport positions itself in direct quality competition with other major European airports such as London Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle, and the neighboring hub of Frankfurt am Main.
