The North Sea island of Juist will once again have regular flight connections to the mainland starting March 15, 2026. The airline Scandinavian Air Charter AS Juist (SAC) will operate the daily shuttle service between Norden-Norddeich Airport and the island's airfield.
This development ends a period of uncertainty that began in early 2025 with the withdrawal of long-time operator FLN Frisia-Luftverkehr. The island community confirmed that the new operator has firmly integrated several daily rotations in each direction into the flight schedule to ensure the supply and accessibility of the tide-dependent island, independent of the ferry schedule.
The company primarily uses two Cessna 206 aircraft for its flight operations. These single-engine high-wing aircraft can accommodate up to four passengers each and, due to their robust construction, are considered particularly suitable for the short grass runways of the East Frisian Islands. In addition to the core route from Norden-Norddeich, SAC Juist plans to expand its services with a flexible charter network. This will include on-demand flights from regional airfields such as Leer-Papenburg and Emden, as well as direct connections from Hamburg and various locations in North Rhine-Westphalia, to create attractive travel times, especially for business travelers and second-home owners.
Further research in the regional air transport market underscores the economic significance of this decision. Due to the strong tidal dependence of shipping, Juist Airport is a critical infrastructure point for passenger and mail transport. Market observers point out that attracting a new operator after Frisia Air Transport's withdrawal was not a given, as operating island airports places high demands on logistics and maintenance. Scandinavian Air Charter brings experience from the Scandinavian regional air transport sector and is now utilizing the existing capacity in East Frisia to fill the resulting market gap in the Wadden Sea region.
Ticket prices and exact departure times will be available on booking portals in time for the start of operations. While island air traffic was previously almost monopolistic, current developments show an increasing diversification of providers along the Lower Saxon coast. The municipality of Juist hopes that the new connection will stabilize visitor numbers, as the flight route, lasting only about five to seven minutes, is the fastest connection to the mainland. Furthermore, the permanent presence of aircraft on the island ensures emergency medical care and the urgent transport of spare parts for the local economy.
