The airline Marabou Airlines has launched a new seasonal flight connection from Nuremberg to Kavala in Northern Greece. Starting August 1, 2025, the route will operate twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays, directly from Albrecht Dürer Airport Nuremberg The first flight was celebrated with a ceremony, including the presence of the Mayor of Nuremberg Marcus King and the Vice Mayor of Kavala, Apostolos Moumtsakis.
The new route is important not only for holidaymakers, but also for the Greek community in Nuremberg. After those with Turkish roots, Greek citizens represent the second largest international ethnic group in the Franconian metropolis. A significant portion of the approximately 15.000 people of Greek descent in Nuremberg come from the Kavala region. The new flight connection now offers them an additional opportunity to visit family and friends back home. The city partnership between Nuremberg and Kavala, which has existed since 1999, celebrated its 25th anniversary just last year, and the new connection is intended to further deepen the exchange between the two cities.
Dr. Michael Hupe, Airport Managing Director, emphasized that Kavala, an attractive destination, would be included in the summer program. At the same time, cooperation with Marabu Airlines will be intensified, as the airline operates its own base with two permanently stationed aircraft at Nuremberg Airport. Paul Fabian, COO of Marabu Airlines, emphasized the importance of the partnership with Nuremberg and explained that the new connection not only creates an attractive holiday destination, but also an important bridge between the two partner cities. Marabu Airlines, a sister company of Condor, offers a total of twelve direct destinations from Nuremberg in its summer flight schedule.
Kavala is a well-known tourist destination in Northern Greece, attracting travelers with its history and culture. The city boasts an old town located on a peninsula and features sights such as an Ottoman fortress and a Roman aqueduct. Furthermore, Kavala is distinguished by its proximity to the sea and its beaches. The city also serves as a starting point for exploring the region. The twinning association "Philos" and other German-Greek associations have been committed to the twinning for many years and also benefit from the new, direct flight connection.
