OMV commissions Austria's first commercial green hydrogen plant

Advertising

The Austrian energy company OMV has commissioned what it claims is Austria's largest green hydrogen production facility at its refinery in Schwechat near Vienna. The facility, with an annual production capacity of up to 1.500 tons of green hydrogen, required an investment of approximately €25 million. The resulting green hydrogen will be used to manufacture more advanced fuels and chemicals.

The new 10-megawatt electrolysis plant uses PEM (polymer electrolyte membrane) technology and is powered exclusively by renewable energy from wind, hydropower, and solar power. By using this green hydrogen in the refinery's production processes, OMV expects to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 15.000 tons annually. This corresponds to the average annual CO2 emissions of approximately 2.000 people in the European Union.

Martijn van Koten, Member of the OMV Executive Board, emphasized the importance of this commissioning for the sustainable production and decarbonization of the Schwechat site. He emphasized that the development of local production and supply chains for green hydrogen in Europe not only supports OMV's climate goals but also drives industrial progress. The know-how gained from this project will be used for future pioneering projects in the field of clean energy. The plant is certified according to the EU RED II directive for the production of renewable fuels of non-biogenic origin and was funded by the Austrian Climate and Energy Fund.
