Swimming is now officially prohibited at the natural bathing lake in the municipality of Markt St. Martin in central Burgenland. As determined by the responsible health authorities of the state of Burgenland during routine water quality tests, the water quality of the recreational facility exceeds the legally permissible limits for microbes.
To avoid health risks such as gastrointestinal diseases or skin irritations among visitors, swimming and bathing in the lake has been prohibited until further notice.
The municipality of Markt St. Martin is working closely with water hygiene experts to determine the causes of the altered water quality. Prolonged heat waves, low water exchange, or increased nutrient input often lead to a rapid proliferation of bacteria such as Escherichia coli or enterococci. Local authorities have posted warning signs on the premises and announced that they will be taking follow-up samples at short intervals. The ban will remain in effect until two consecutive measurements confirm that the water quality is once again satisfactory.
Due to similar names, news of the closure in recent days has led to some misunderstandings among vacationers and day visitors in the region. The management of the St. Martins Therme & Lodge in Frauenkirchen clarified that their facility is located in the Seewinkel region of northern Burgenland and is not affected by the official measures in Markt St. Martin. The spa's own eight-hectare bathing lake is monitored separately and, according to management, has completely normal water quality.
Water management experts and consumer protection advocates generally advise visitors to bathing lakes during the summer months to check the current water quality seals issued by the federal states before entering natural bodies of water. Small, stagnant bodies of water react quickly to biological pollution at high temperatures, which is why close monitoring by public health authorities is essential to maintain hygienic standards at public bathing areas.
