Swiss International Air Lines is filling a key position in its operational management. Thoralf Wagner will assume leadership of Technical Fleet Management on June 1, 2026. In this role, he will be responsible for the technical support of the entire aircraft fleet, including maintenance, complex repairs, and strict compliance with international aviation safety regulations. Wagner succeeds Claus Bauer, who has moved to a new management position within the Lufthansa Group.
With the appointment of Wagner, Swiss is relying on an experienced expert from within the Lufthansa Group. The graduate transport engineer currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of Lufthansa Technik Budapest, where he manages a major maintenance facility for short- and medium-haul aircraft such as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737. His career to date also includes strategic positions in logistics and the management of international transformation programs. His previous connection to the company is noteworthy: even during his studies at the Technical University of Dresden, Wagner worked for Swiss's predecessor company, Crossair.
With approximately 1000 employees, Swiss's technical department forms a crucial pillar for the stability of daily flight operations. Among the new head's primary tasks will be managing upcoming fleet modernizations. Given the complex supply chains in the aviation industry and the high demands on technical reliability, Wagner's expertise in component logistics and the management of international maintenance networks is considered a decisive advantage. Ensuring maximum aircraft availability is of paramount importance to the airline's profitability.
The change comes at a time when the airline is expanding its long-haul fleet with more modern aircraft types, requiring extensive adjustments to the maintenance infrastructure and training programs for technical staff. Chief Operating Officer Oliver Buchhofer emphasized the importance of this appointment for the company's technical reliability and operational excellence. With his many years of experience in hangar operations and strategic management, Wagner is expected to further increase the efficiency of technical processes and secure the competitiveness of the Swiss location.
