Memmingen Airport closed the 2025 financial year with a record high. As the airport management announced on January 5, 2026, a total of 3.698.900 passengers used the Swabian regional airport last year.
This means the original annual target of 3,5 million passengers was already exceeded before the Christmas holidays. Compared to the previous year, in which around 3,24 million passengers were counted, this represents a significant increase of over 14 percent. The growth was primarily driven by the expansion of scheduled services and consistently high aircraft utilization, with a total of 35.546 flight movements recorded.
A key factor in its success is its strategic focus on the Eastern European market. In addition to classic destinations like Palma de Mallorca, flights to Tirana, Pristina, Belgrade, and Skopje each carried over 100.000 passengers. The airport increasingly serves as a logistical hub for workers in the healthcare and hospitality sectors, as well as for visitors. At the same time, it is solidifying its role as a key arrival point for tourism in the Alpine region. To meet rising demand, the operator recently invested around three million euros in infrastructure, including expanding terminal capacity to a second level and constructing new taxiways to improve all-weather operations.
For the current year, 2026, Managing Director Ralf Schmid announced a course of consolidation. Planned growth is expected to be more moderate at around five percent than in previous years, with a focus on the digitalization of handling processes. A positive boost is anticipated for the second half of the year from the planned reduction in air passenger duty, which, according to management, should further increase the airline's attractiveness to partner airlines such as Ryanair and Wizz Air. The flight schedule will see the return of established destinations such as Târgu Mureș, Romania, at the end of March. In addition, SunExpress plans to increase frequencies to the Turkish Riviera for the summer season.
The airport's economic importance to the region is also reflected in its employee statistics. The number of employees at Flughafen Memmingen GmbH and its subsidiary ALLgate GmbH rose from 388 to 432 over the course of the year. This includes twelve new trainees and students, underscoring the need for qualified specialists. Despite this rapid growth, airport management emphasizes the necessity of maintaining consistent service quality and gradually adapting the infrastructure to the new record levels, including through the planned construction of a parking garage with 1.800 spaces.
