Royal Jordanian, the national airline of Jordan, is resuming its flight service between Amman and Vienna after a prolonged hiatus. Starting June 24, 2026, the flag carrier will serve the Austrian capital four times a week.
This decision is part of a comprehensive fleet and network strategy with which the airline aims to expand its presence in the European market after the challenges of recent years. Vienna, due to its geographical location and its function as an Eastern European hub, is considered a strategically important destination for passengers from the Levant region.
Royal Jordanian relies on flexible fleet planning for this route to optimally adapt capacity to demand. Modern medium-haul aircraft such as the Airbus A320neo and Embraer E190-E2 and E195-E2 models are used. The integration of the new Embraer E2 generation, in particular, underscores the airline's modernization efforts. These aircraft types are characterized by high operational efficiency on short- and medium-haul routes, enabling the airline to offer an economically viable frequency even with fluctuating passenger numbers.
Additional market analysis reveals that Royal Jordanian is currently pursuing a massive fleet expansion. The airline has ordered a total of 30 new aircraft to nearly double its existing capacity by 2028. In addition to Embraer regional jets, the company is also investing in more Boeing 787 Dreamliners for long-haul routes and additional Airbus A320neo family aircraft. The resumption of the Vienna route is also part of enhanced cooperation within the Oneworld alliance, offering Austrian passengers improved connections to Aqaba and other destinations in the Middle East and Asia.
The return to Vienna takes place in a competitive environment where other airlines, such as Austrian Airlines, also serve the Amman region. Royal Jordanian is leveraging its position as a full-service carrier, offering both Economy and Business Class on its aircraft. By increasing flight operations at Queen Alia International Airport in Amman, Jordan is also reinforcing its ambitions to establish itself as a stable transit hub between Europe and the Gulf States. Flight days and times are scheduled to benefit both business travelers and the tourism sector from the new direct connections.
