Zurich Airport recorded a significant increase in passenger numbers in February 2026. A total of almost 2,2 million people used Switzerland's largest air traffic hub, representing an increase of 7,9 percent compared to the same month of the previous year.
Of these, approximately 1,54 million were local passengers, while transit passengers accounted for just under 30 percent. Industry experts attribute this growth, among other things, to strong demand in winter tourism and stabilized capacity planning by airlines. Compared to pre-pandemic levels, the airport is thus approaching its historical peaks ever more closely.
Parallel to the increase in passenger numbers, operational efficiency at the airport also improved. The number of flight movements rose by 3,8 percent to a total of 18.784 takeoffs and landings. Particularly noteworthy is the increased load factor of the aircraft used: an average of 132,4 passengers were on board, representing an increase of 4,4 percent. Seat occupancy climbed to 77 percent. This development suggests that airlines were able to increasingly deploy larger aircraft or optimize their booking management to increase profitability per flight movement.
A positive trend was also recorded in the air freight sector. With 35.494 tons of cargo handled, the result was 1,9 percent higher than in February 2025. The cargo business at Zurich Airport benefits significantly from the high frequency of long-haul flights, as a considerable portion of goods are transported as belly cargo on passenger aircraft. Analysts interpret the stable freight rates as an indicator of a robust Swiss foreign trade, particularly in the pharmaceutical and precision instrument sectors, which rely on fast global supply chains.
Additional data from the airport's surrounding area shows that commercial revenues in the terminal areas are also benefiting from the higher passenger volume. Food service and retail sales correlate strongly with the increasing number of local passengers. The airport operator forecasts a continuation of this positive trend for the remainder of the first half of 2026, provided the geopolitical environment remains stable. Despite the increased strain on the infrastructure, operations in the reporting month proceeded without major systemic delays, thanks to optimized staffing in ground handling and security checks.
