Strategic restructuring and fleet modernization at Air Astana

Kazakhstan's Air Astana airline will initiate a comprehensive restructuring of its corporate management in spring 2026. After more than two decades at the helm, Peter Foster will hand over the role of Chief Executive Officer to Ibrahim Canliel. The future CEO, who previously served as Chief Financial Officer (CFO), represents continuity in the operational strategy and will be joined by Gonçalo Pires, who comes from TAP Air Portugal as the airline's new CFO.

This change in leadership coincides with a period of massive capacity expansion: Air Astana has reached an agreement in principle for up to 50 Airbus A320neo family aircraft, as well as firm orders for Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. The aim is to modernize its current fleet of 62 aircraft, which also includes the low-cost carrier FlyArystan, and to consolidate its market leadership in Central Asia.

Frankfurt Airport remains the central hub for the European market. Starting in the summer season of 2026, Air Astana will commence operations in the newly opened Terminal 3, offering daily flights to Astana and multiple weekly flights to Almaty and Uralsk. Flight times have been strategically adjusted: the Almaty flight now departs in the afternoon to allow passengers from across Germany a relaxed journey to Frankfurt Airport. Within Kazakhstan, connection times have been optimized, enabling destinations such as Kostanay to be reached in just over ten hours. The airline will offer a high-comfort configuration, featuring flat-bed seats in Business Class and comprehensive services in Economy Class.

A key pillar of the growth strategy is promoting tourism through attractive transit offers. With its "MyStopover" program, the airline allows travelers to stay in Astana or Almaty for a small surcharge, which includes hotel accommodations and transfers. Since German, Austrian, and Swiss citizens do not require a visa for stays of up to 30 days, Kazakhstan is increasingly positioning itself as an uncomplicated destination for business and leisure travelers. Furthermore, the acquisition of Airbus A321LR aircraft in a special deluxe configuration enables the airline to efficiently operate longer routes while offering a premium experience comparable to that of wide-body aircraft.

Long-term plans call for expanding the fleet to up to 18 Dreamliners by 2035, significantly increasing its range on intercontinental routes. This major order further strengthens the partnership with Airbus, which has already existed for 20 years. Industry experts view these investments as a clear sign of the company's economic stability and confidence in the strategic importance of the Belt and Road Initiative for air transport. Air Astana is leveraging Kazakhstan's geographical location as a bridge between Europe and Asia to capture market share from other major hub airlines.
