The Regiojet parent company Student Agency was able to arrange 2023 percent more flight tickets in 30 than in the previous period. A closer look at the numbers reveals an interesting picture, as flights were increasingly departing from Vienna and Munich. In Prague, the group even recorded a decline.

The most popular destinations in 2023 were Bangkok, Paris, New York, London, Maldives, Bali, Dubai, Barcelona, Colombo and Malaga. Ticket prices for European destinations remained stable, while prices for long-haul destinations were cheaper in the first half of the year and increased by 12-22 percent in the second half.

In 2023, Student Agency customers increasingly purchased flight tickets from Vienna and Munich. The proportion of departures from Prague fell from 62 percent to 57 percent. The Bavarian airport appears to have been more in demand than in previous years, as four percent of all tickets sold went to this airport. Vienna-Schwechat rose from 19 percent to 21 percent. On the other hand, airports such as Frankfurt, Krakow and Katowice have kept their share of total revenue constant, which is less than one percent in both comparative years.

Best-selling destinations by departure location

  • From Prague: The most popular destinations were Paris, New York, Malaga, Bangkok, London, Dubai, Lisbon, Bali, Istanbul and Madeira (Funchal).
  • From Vienna: The most popular destinations included Bangkok, New York, Colombo, Phuket, Istanbul, Malta, Mahé (Seychelles), Paris, Bali and the Maldives.
  • From Munich: The most popular destinations included remote locations such as Bangkok, Cancun, New York, Miami, Maldives, San Jose, Roatan, Phuket, Colombo, Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

Suitcase-free tariffs shorten the length of stay

Student Agency has also found that the so-called “light tariffs”, in which the transport of checked baggage is subject to a charge, has led to a reduction in the length of stay. In 2023, this was an average of 12 days - one day less than in the previous period.

In 2023, airline passengers' shopping habits will have returned to levels before airline tickets were abolished. Flight tickets are now usually purchased three to six months before the planned departure.

When it comes to accommodation, the breakfast tariff (BB) will dominate in 2023, which will be chosen by 85% of customers. Only 14,6% of customers choose accommodation without meals and only 0,3% choose half board or all-inclusive. The majority of customers (68%) prefer refundable accommodation rates.

“For 2024, we expect the volume of tickets sold to reach 2019 levels. European airlines plan to increase capacity by 7%, North American airlines by 8,1 percent and Asia-Pacific airlines plan to increase capacity by 98,4 percent compared to 2019, which is also very positive,” explains sales manager Martina Hrnčířová .

It is well known that Vienna is the second largest airport after PRG for Czech passengers. Vienna is also used as a departure airport for low-cost airlines, which usually sell their tickets directly. However, there are no precise public statistics on this. For example, as a resident of Brno (2k inhabitants, 398km from VIE by car), I flew from VIE 130 times last year, once from BRQ and once from BTS. But I never bought tickets through agents such as "Student Agency", but always directly from airlines. So the reality could be even more in VIE's favor. My estimate is that 5-1 percent of all guests in Vienna are Czechs, 1-5 are Slovaks, and up to 10 percent are Hungarians and Slovenes. Or does anyone have better VIE statistics?
