Study: Vietnam charges the highest fees for cash withdrawals

A recent study by the financial services provider Wise shows that tourists in Vietnam have to pay the highest fees in the world for ATM withdrawals. The average fee there is €27,10 per €100 withdrawal, which corresponds to an increase of over 1.300 percent.

In the global ranking, Vietnam is followed by Argentina with 20,51 percent and Colombia with 16,66 percent. Within Europe, Turkey is the most expensive destination for cash withdrawals, averaging 5,08 percent, followed by Albania with 2,62 percent. In Germany, by comparison, the fees are only 0,28 percent.

According to a spokesman for Wise The high costs arise from fixed fees for foreign cards combined with low withdrawal limits and unfavorable exchange rates. The analysis is based on 9,7 million withdrawals made between February and July 2025.

To avoid high fees, experts recommend using ATMs near bank branches and making larger withdrawals instead of numerous smaller ones. Additionally, travelers can use cards with no foreign currency fees.
