Swedish aviation industry launches campaign against unruly passengers

Advertising

The Swedish aviation industry has launched a comprehensive awareness campaign entitled “Flygplansläge” (Flight Mode) to combat the growing problem of disruptive passenger behavior.

The initiative is a response to a statistically documented increase in incidents on board aircraft and in airport buildings. According to industry reports, the most frequent offenses include excessive alcohol consumption, aggressive behavior towards staff, and disregard for crew safety instructions. The campaign aims to raise awareness among travelers upon arrival at the airport about the importance of respectful interaction, thereby increasing safety and comfort for all passengers.

The alliance is supported by a broad coalition of government agencies and private companies, including airport operator Swedavia, the Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen), the police, and international organizations such as EASA and IATA. Major airlines like SAS and Norwegian, as well as security service providers like Securitas, are also involved in the implementation. The participants emphasize that misconduct can have drastic consequences for those affected: in addition to being denied boarding, they face hefty fines, legal action, and liability for operational costs, which, for example, in the case of an unscheduled stopover, can quickly reach five-figure sums.

The initiative is based on current data from European airspace showing that alcohol remains a major contributing factor to escalations on board aircraft. Incidents are reported daily across Europe, some of which, in the worst-case scenario, jeopardize flight safety. The campaign uses the metaphorical term "flight mode" to encourage passengers to control their emotions and contribute to maintaining order. Increased cooperation between ground staff, security personnel, and cabin crews aims to improve the early detection of potentially problematic passengers before they board the aircraft.

In Sweden, the campaign will be present nationwide at all major airports through visual signage and digital communication. Aviation representatives emphasize that enforcing existing standards is crucial to protecting the working environment for air transport employees. While most flights run smoothly, the few problematic cases tie up significant resources and cause unnecessary delays. With the "Flygplansläge" (Flight Plan Disorder) campaign, Sweden is sending a clear message in favor of stricter handling of onboard discipline violations, following similar initiatives in other European countries and the USA.
