The Swiss airline Swiss is investing in the future of its long-haul fleet and has announced the expansion of its Airbus A350-900 fleet. A total of ten aircraft of this type will be delivered by 2031, five of which were recently ordered. The first aircraft will enter service in summer 2025, while the transition from older Airbus A340 models progresses. Swiss is thus underlining its position as the premium airline of the Lufthansa Group.
According to Swiss, the A350-900 sets new standards, not only with its state-of-the-art technology, but also with its innovative "Swiss Senses" cabin. This includes a four-class configuration with 242 seats: three in First Class, 45 in Business Class, 38 in the extended Premium Economy and 156 in Economy Class. Premium Economy offers the most seats in this class in the entire Swiss fleet, a clear signal of the growing demand in this segment.
The cabin was designed in Swiss's iconic design and offers a special travel experience, characterized by generous comfort and the latest technology. According to Jens Fehlinger, CEO of Swiss, the fleet expansion is an essential step to meet customer demands.
significance for Swiss and the Lufthansa Group
The strategic decision to renew the fleet underlines the Lufthansa Group's objective of strengthening Swiss as a premium provider. By integrating modern technologies and additional capacity, the airline is ensuring that it remains competitive in the long term. The new aircraft also open up opportunities to serve new routes and make existing routes more efficient.
While the exact routes are still being determined, the A350 aircraft could be used primarily on busy intercontinental routes. With a range of around 15.000 kilometers and outstanding passenger capacity, the Airbus A350-900 is predestined for transatlantic flights and connections to Asia.
