The globally active ground handling and air freight service provider Swissport has completed its operational entry into the Chinese market with the commissioning of a state-of-the-art air freight terminal at Shanghai Pudong Airport (PVG).
The new “Digital & Intelligent International Cargo Terminal” covers a total area of 144.000 square meters and was specifically designed to meet the demands of the rapidly growing e-commerce sector. The Swiss company is collaborating with Smarex, a strategic joint venture between Avinex Logistics and China Eastern Airlines Logistics, on the realization and operation of this major project. This partnership secures the service provider direct access to one of Asia's most important trade hubs.
The terminal relies heavily on digital control technologies and automated sorting systems to significantly reduce processing times in international freight traffic. Through the complete integration of the facility into Swissport's global network, which encompasses 312 airports in 49 countries, Shanghai is more closely connected to major cargo hubs in Europe and North America. According to the company, the optimized process chain enables a considerable acceleration of transit times, allowing certain cargo to reach its destination up to two days faster than before. The logistics infrastructure also includes 15.000 square meters of specially temperature-controlled storage space designed for the sensitive transport of pharmaceutical products and perishable fresh goods.
A key feature of the facility is the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) for the dynamic control of all cargo processes within the terminal. The AI systems monitor and optimize the flow of goods in real time to prevent bottlenecks during the loading and unloading of cargo aircraft. For Swissport, the Shanghai location serves as a technological pilot project and model for the future expansion of intelligent air freight centers within its own corporate network. Given the continued high demand for cross-border online retail goods, management anticipates continuous cargo growth of eight to ten percent at the Shanghai location in the coming years.
Swissport's expansion into China comes at a time when global supply chains, driven by the booming e-commerce sector and capacity constraints in maritime shipping, are increasingly reliant on fast air freight connections. Shanghai Pudong Airport is among the world's top three cargo airports by total tonnage and forms the logistical hub for the export of electronics and consumer goods from China's industrial centers. By entering this market, Swissport strengthens its position in direct competition with other major international logistics and handling companies.
