Cruise market records significant growth and high booking numbers

The German cruise market is continuing its expansion with considerable momentum in 2026. According to Aida Cruises, over three million German holidaymakers took an ocean cruise last year, representing an increase of nine percent compared to the previous year.

The company, which positions itself as the market leader in the national segment with around 1,5 million guests, reports record fleet occupancy. Particularly striking is the trend towards long-term reservations, some extending up to two years in advance, as well as a steadily growing demand for high-quality premium packages.

A key factor in the company's stable business development is its focus on European cruising areas, which offer guests a high degree of planning certainty. Departure ports such as Hamburg, Kiel, and Warnemünde benefit from their excellent accessibility, with routes to Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and the Baltic states currently experiencing the strongest booking growth. Market research also confirms the increasing popularity of multigenerational travel. Around two-thirds of Germans have already vacationed with several generations, and cruises, with their diverse infrastructure, are considered ideal for this type of travel by one in five respondents.

To meet continued demand, the cruise line has launched the comprehensive fleet modernization program "Aida Evolution." By 2028, all seven ships of the Selection class will undergo a complete technical and visual overhaul. Currently, the Aida Bella is in dry dock in Marseille for a seven-week shipyard stay and is expected to return to active service on March 11. These measures are intended to secure capacity until the first of two planned newbuilds, each with approximately 2.100 guest cabins, joins the fleet in 2030.

Industry analysts confirm that, despite global political tensions, the cruise industry maintains its role as the strongest growth driver in the German travel market. Investments in the existing fleet and the planning of new ship generations with modern propulsion systems demonstrate the companies' confidence in long-term market stability. By combining established Northern European routes with the development of new target groups, particularly in the family and premium travel sectors, operators like AIDA are solidifying their economic foundation for the coming decade.
